Music Library: Thom’s Tunes

Apr 4, 2014

We’re always interested to learn how creative people go about their work. How do they get their creative juices flowing?

For many designers, music is a way of tuning out the world and finding inspiration. This certainly is the case for Thom, EQ3′s Creative Director. When he’s not in meetings or doing store visits, you can usually find Thom at his computer with ear buds in and the music playing.

Here’s 13 tracks that Thom’s currently listening to while he works. May they inspire your work day too!

Today’s music playlist is brought to you by Nils Vik!

Nils is a former EQ3 designer and product developer. One of his most notable designs for EQ3 is the Burrows Bedroom, a collection that’s still in production! He left EQ3 in 2011 to start his own business venture - Parlour Coffee - an independent coffee shop in downtown Winnipeg’s Exchange District. Parlour quickly became the hottest spot to grab a cup of quality, North American roasted coffee or espresso. The shop offers fresh and local baked goods, and contains a small retail store selling a carefully curated selection of coffee related goods! They also feature a rotating selection of artwork. Building on the success of Parlour, Nils opened a sister shop – Little Sister Coffee Maker – with his sister-in-law Vanessa Stachiw in Osborne Village last fall.

There appears to be no stopping this guy, and we’re excited to see what’s next for him. If you’re in the Winnipeg area, stop by Parlour and Little Sister Coffee Maker and say hello. Follow Parlour Coffee on Tumblr at parlourcoffee.tumblr.com, and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

We’re thrilled to have Christopher Samms guest mixing for us this month.

Christopher is a Freelance Graphic Designer living and working in Winnipeg. His designs are minimalist and striking, and impossible not to love! In just a few short year’s, Christopher has built up an impressive portfolio. He’s particularly sought after in the music industry, designing album art for bands such as Royal Canoe and posters for clients like local concert venue Union Sound Hall. Most notably, while working at Clark+Huot/Cocoon, Christopher was part of a small group that developed the creative concept and tagline ‘We Speak Music‘ for the 2014 Juno Awards, which will be held here in Winnipeg next month. The tagline so perfectly sums up the significance of music in our city’s culture.

Today’s playlist features lively rock and indie pop music. All with a strong beat. All pulled from Christopher’s personal record collection. He also designed this gorgeous cover art for us, so while you’re listening to this playlist, do yourself a favour and check out his online portfolio at www.christophersamms.com.

You can also follow Christopher on Tumblr at christophersamms.tumblr.com and on Instagram @christophersamms.

Oh (cold) snap! It’s been a harsh winter out here in Winnipeg, and a quick scroll down our Facebook and Twitter news feeds tells us we’re not alone. We need a break. A break from talk of ice storms and windchill factors and polar vortexes. A break from Tweets comparing Winnipeg temps to those of Mars.

Not all of us have the luxury of jetting off someplace warm, so we’re “Bringing the Heat” to you. Amy (that’s me!) has compiled 12 folky tunes that’ll instantly transport you to your favourite outdoor music festival.

Today’s playlist comes from Braden Alexander.

Braden grew up in Winnipeg and is well-known in the area for co-creating (and creative directing) SANDBOX, an award-winning fashion and culture magazine. While going for his Master’s of Publishing in Vancouver, Braden kept his connection to the Prairies alive by blogging with a colleague over at Poster (www.thisisposter.com), a Winnipeg-based blog spotlighting creative talent. Braden has since moved out east (he currently resides in Toronto) to further his dreams of working in the magazine industry. He’s currently teamed up with Precedent as their Associate Editor.

In addition to his broad scope of work in communications and publishing, Braden is quite the playlist mixer and has been known to throw some of the best house parties and event launch parties this city has ever seen. Winnipeg hasn’t been the same without him.

You can shuffle through a selection of Braden’s playlists here, but first, have a listen to this holiday party playlist he’s put together exclusively for EQ3.
