Last month we introduced you to #EQ3ingoodcompany, a new hashtag celebrating our EQ3+ product line, a collection of design classics including Herman Miller, Marimekko, Pablo and more. This month, we take a closer look at this vibrant history of Marimekko.

Founded in 1951 by Armi Ratia, Finnish-based textiles brand Marimekko is best known for their big, bold and often bright prints. Though originally the designs were not intended for commercial sale, they quickly garnered the attention of both the public and the industry in 1951. In the 1960s Jacqueline Kennedy made headlines for purchasing seven Marimekko dresses – all in one shopping trip – at the only Marimekko destination in North America at the time. Since then the brand has be- come synonymous with modern, sophisticated design. The impact that Marimekko had did not only influence the fashion industry, but created a lifestyle movement. More and more patterns and prints were being introduced into the home on a larger scale, adorning house- wares, accessories and more.

Marimekko’s printmaking process itself is an extraordinary one, spanning a full year from the initial sketch to the final printed fabric. The process is a true labour of love that begins with each designer’s unique vision. “Our passion for bright colours and bold black-and- white contrasts is unmistakable,” explains Director of Home Products and Print Design, Minna Kemell-Kutvonen. One of Marimekko’s most recognizable prints, Unikko, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014. This vibrant pink and coral floral pattern is illustrative of the pop art movement prevalent of its time.
