Step 1: Create a slipknot, put one of your needles through and tighten. Cast on your desired number of stitches. Have a mug on hand for a rough estimate. (POP mug: 18 stitches did the trick.)

Step 2: Start knitting!

How to create a seed stitch:

Always use an even number of stitches, alternating between knitting and purling. When starting a new row, use the opposite stitch from what you used in the row before.

ex:

K P K P K P K P K P

P K P K P K P K P K

K P K P K P K P K P

Step 3: As you go, wrap the cozy around your mug until you’ve reached your desired width (POP Mug: 68 rows). Once you’ve completed the main body of the cozy, cast off and use your tapestry needle to weave the tails into cozy.

Step 4: To easily taper the ends of the cozy in, fold the two corners down. Use a needle and thread that matches your yarn to stitch the corners together. Do this on both ends.

Step 5: Use the needle and thread to attach a button to your cozy.

Step 6: Use your tapestry needle to knit a button loop. Cut a sizable length of matching yarn, thread the yarn through the needle, fold the yarn in half and tie the ends together with a square knot. Use the button loop stitch until your loop is completed. After you’re done, cut the yarn, knot the ends, pull tightly, and cut the tails close to the knot.

Step 7: Wrap the cozy around your mug and attach. You’re all done! Now all that’s left to do is to make some hot chocolate and enjoy the changing season in the comfort of your (heated) home.
