EQ3’s Creative Director, Thom Fougere, is based out of the head office in Winnipeg, Canada, but lately he’s been spending a lot of time in San Francisco designing and overseeing renovations of EQ3’s new retail showroom in the Design District. In between long days at his makeshift desk during construction, Thom found time to explore San Francisco’s unique culture scene.
Today, he’s taking us on a virtual tour of his favourite spots in the city.
Over the past few months I have travelled back and forth between San Francisco and Winnipeg frequently during the design and development phases of our new showroom. In each city I visit, I tend to gravitate towards restaurants, cafés, second hand book shops, and art galleries.
San Francisco has a good assortment of all of these and more, so here is a list of 7 of my favourites.
The Sightglass café is within walking distance of our new showroom in the Design District. There a number of really good cafés in San Francisco, including Blue Bottle, and Four Barrel, but Sightglass was my favourite.
Three Locations: Soma District (270 7th Street, San Francisco, CA, 94103), Mission District (3014 20th Street, San Francisco, CA, 94110), Saturday Farmer’s Market (San Francisco Ferry Building, San Francisco, CA, 94111)
02. Tartine Bakery
Tartine Bakery is quite busy in the morning with lineups often out the door. It lives up to the hype. One of the best croissants I’ve ever had.
Location: 600 Guerrero Street San Francisco, CA 94110
With such a healthy bike culture, there is no shortage of bike shops in San Francisco. Huckleberry Bicycles is a full service bike shop with a good looking retail front offering a huge variety of products and brands.
Location: 1073 Market Street, San Francisco, CA 94103
04. Trick Dog
My favourite place to catch a drink in San Francisco. It’s also located just down the street from another restaurant I enjoy – Flour + Water.
Location: 3010 20th Street San Francisco, CA 94114
Nopa is one of my favourite restaurants in San Francisco. It specializes in organic wood-fired cuisine, in a comforting communal atmosphere.
Location: 560 Divisadero (at Hayes) San Francisco, CA 94117
It’s second hand book stores like this that really reveal how soulless book shopping at Amazon.com can be. Green Apple Books has a great collection of fiction, non-fiction, art and architecture books.
Location: 506 Clement Street (at 6th Avenue), San Francisco, CA 94118
07. Muir Woods
The Muir Woods National Monument made me feel small and insignificant. Being surrounded by giant Redwood trees, hundreds of years old (some thousands), can only make you think of the passing of time while trekking through the woods.
